Research from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai has revealed that the environmental conditions in which World Trade Center responders live may significantly impact their long-term physical and mental health, 25 years after the September 11 attacks. The study, published in Nature Communications, found a correlation between exposure to higher temperatures and air pollution and an increased risk of frailty, PTSD, and depression among these responders as they age. The research, titled "Urban Exposures, Frailty, and Mental Illness in World Trade Center Health Program Responders," is the first to investigate how later-life environmental exposures might interact with the chemical and psychological effects related to the World Trade Center attacks.
Helena Furman Krasnov, PhD, a postdoctoral researcher and the study's first author, stated, "Twenty-five years after 9/11, we are still learning about the factors that influence the health of those who responded to the attacks. Our findings suggest that everyday exposures, including heat, air pollution, and access to green space, may contribute to responders' long-term physical and psychological well-being. Understanding these factors could help identify new opportunities to support healthy aging in this population."
The study analyzed data from 18,734 responders living in New York City who are enrolled in the World Trade Center Health Clinical Centers of Excellence. Researchers assessed their annual exposure to air pollution, high temperatures, and neighborhood greenness, examining the relation to frailty, PTSD, and depression.
The findings indicated that responders in hotter, more polluted neighborhoods faced elevated risks of frailty and mental health challenges. Those already exposed to toxic substances and psychological stressors from the attacks were found to be more susceptible to the adverse effects of their environmental conditions.
Maayan Yitshak-Sade, MPH, PhD, Associate Professor of Environmental Medicine and senior author of the study, emphasized that the health impacts of 9/11 extend beyond the immediate disaster. He noted that everyday environmental factors might represent an ongoing source of stress for individuals already dealing with previous trauma and toxic effects.
The researchers believe the implications of their findings could apply beyond the World Trade Center responder community, suggesting that individuals affected by other disasters, such as wildfires or industrial accidents, may experience similar long-term health effects due to environmental stressors.
The team intends to explore further whether positive environmental elements, such as green spaces and access to nutritious food, might offset some of the long-lasting health consequences associated with World Trade Center-related exposures.
